Wentling, Brooks, Celebrate Funding for Two Area Recreation Projects

January 28, 2025

HARRISBURG – Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer) and Sen. Michele Brooks (R-Mercer/Crawford/Lawrence) today announced that two projects in the 7th District have received funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP).

Act 13 of 2012 established the Marcellus Legacy Fund and allocates funds to the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) for planning, acquisition, development, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks and beautification projects using the GTRP.

Sharon has received $166,970 to construct a pedestrian walkway along the Shenango River. The project will include removing the existing deteriorated walkway, constructing a new walkway, utility relocation, and installing fencing and energy-efficient lighting.

Hermitage has received $95,000 for the Hermitage Athletic Complex field lighting project. The project will purchase and install a factory-built, wired, aimed and tested lighting system that includes pre-cast concrete bases, galvanized steel poles, factory-wired and tested remote electrical component enclosures, pole length factory-assembled wire harnesses, and factory-aimed and assembled luminaires with technology to track the ball in play.

"This is fantastic news for the Shenango Valley," said Wentling. "Both projects will be beneficial for everyone and help continue to make the 7th Legislative District one of the best places to live, work and raise a family."

“I always appreciate working with local municipalities to access funding that provides the ability to expand recreational opportunities for local families and visitors alike,” said Brooks. “This project continues to build on the growth of downtown Sharon and capitalizes on its waterfront appeal.”
