Wentling: Nearly $1.1 Million in LSA Grants Awarded for Mercer County Projects

GREENVILLE – Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer) today announced $1.075 million in Local Share Account (LSA) grants have been approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority for three projects in Mercer County.

“When a local government needs a public works facility repaired, a community center needs a reliable heating system or an animal shelter needs room to care for more animals, those are needs people can see in their communities every day,” Wentling said. “These grants will help local organizations move necessary projects forward without putting the full cost on local taxpayers.”

The grants are:

• Hempfield Township/Stray Haven Animal Shelter – $450,000 – to help construct a new animal shelter replacing the organization’s 25-year-old facility, expanding dog and cat kennel capacity by more than 45% and adding improved quarantine, intake, exam, grooming, adoption and education areas. Stray Haven’s capital campaign says the organization has outgrown its current shelter and plans a 3,400-square-foot facility on six acres purchased in Greenville in 2023.

• Hermitage – $325,000 – for the Wheatland Neighborhood Public Works Investment Project, which will renovate the municipal maintenance garage, repair the structure and driveway, add space for a Vactor truck, replace deteriorated building components and improve restroom accessibility.

• Penn-Northwest Development Corporation/Baughman Family Community Center – $300,000 – to replace the center’s aging boiler system, including hazardous-material abatement, demolition, plumbing, new boilers and pumps, electrical work and controls. The Greenville-area center provides childcare, recreation and wellness programming to about 1,800 members.
Local Share Account funds are generated under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 71 of 2004), which provides for the distribution of gaming revenues through the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to support projects in the public interest across Pennsylvania. The CFA was established in 2004 as an independent agency to administer Pennsylvania economic development programs and investments.
